Low carbon 2,700m² residential development in the Porte des Lilas district of Paris.

The project consisted of two north/south facing buildings of four and five storeys, separated by a central garden, and included 25 social housing units and a 68 bed crèche on the top two levels with a rooftop garden for the children. This development marked the final phase of a major urban regeneration initiative.

Designed to achieve the E3C2 label and BEE+ Paris certification, the project adopted a low-carbon approach with a mixed timber and concrete structure, Porotherm brick infills, and wooden windows. Key sustainability measures included a biomass boiler, photovoltaic panels, and underfloor heating for the crèche. These features successfully reduced the building’s carbon footprint during construction and operation while enhancing thermal and visual comfort.

Our role involved optimising the structural design to balance sustainability, aesthetics, and performance. We explored various timber and timber-concrete hybrid solutions, minimising material use while meeting acoustic and fire safety requirements. The final design integrated cross laminated timber (CLT) floors in one building and concrete floors in the other, achieving a thoughtful balance of cost and functionality.

Through collaborative engagement with the architect and contractor, we delivered innovative solutions, including an optimised structural approach and support for the client’s vision.
