Meet… Ted Skinner, Project Engineer

Meet Ted Skinner, Project Engineer. Ted has recently joined our Sydney office and specialises in collaborating with architects, designers, project managers and consultants to develop structural designs aligned with architectural goals. Ted’s expertise predominantly lies in the residential sector, with large ranging projects spanning civic, public use and educational sectors. Additionally, he works part-time as a structural engineering consultant for the Masters of Architecture course at the University of Technology Sydney. 

Why Structural Engineering?
Structural Engineering allows me to think creatively, analyse and problem solve, whilst contributing to the design, construction and refurbishment of spaces that are important to people. All disciplines in our industry are equally important, but structural engineering feels special to me because it provides a physical framework for the design, utilisation and occupation of spaces.

Why Eckersley O’Callaghan?
In the construction industry, I believe we have an obligation to ensure that the development of the built environment happens responsibly and sustainably. Eckersley O’Callaghan encourages and promotes this kind of work, enabling me to collaborate on projects that not only hold high architectural significance, but also exhibit a strong appreciation of the importance and role of structural sustainability.

What are you working on at the moment?
Currently, I am working on a new park project in Bradfield, Western Sydney, for which Eckerlsey O’Callaghan are responsible for the structural engineering of a variety of cultural and amenity structures within the park precinct. I am also working on a new sports pavilion in Northern Sydney, and two timber-portal frame houses in regional New South Wales.

Biggest challenge/opportunity for engineers?
Successful communication. Good communication skills are key for any engineer – we have a wealth of technical knowledge and reasoning, but presenting it in a relatable way requires some nuance. The way that we deliver our thoughts, ideas and solutions to other project stakeholders shapes the way they are received and can be very impactful on a project.

What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about buildings that are not only important to people, but also respect and allow for an appreciation of the natural environment. A building that is enjoyed by as many people as possible, is built responsibly and compliments the environment is unbeatable.
