Meet… Luigi Giovannini, Environmental Facade Designer
11 February 2025

Meet Luigi Giovannini, Environmental Facade Designer. He specialises in researching systems, materials, and methodologies to address complex design challenges while developing digital tools to enhance our analytical capabilities.
Why Environmental Facade Engineering?
Environmental design addresses environmental issues when developing buildings and plans, minimising the impact of human activities whilst still tailoring spaces to the needs of occupants. Nowadays, the climate is changing as never before, and it is our duty to reduce the human impact on the environment as much as possible.
Why Eckersley O’Callaghan?
Eckersley O’Callaghan represents excellence in the facade world. It is synonymous with reliability and quality, and it is for this reason that we are involved in such challenging projects. Only here do I have the possibility of applying environmental design principles to projects that have such artistic and social importance, and therefore make such a difference.
What are you working on at the moment?
I’m currently working on a series of projects in which we are verifying the impact of the facade on the visual comfort condition of the occupants and, if necessary, providing suggestions to improve the design. Meanwhile, on other projects, I am evaluating the impact of advanced facade technologies on the final energy use of buildings, as well as on building operational carbon.
Biggest challenge/opportunity for engineers?
The biggest challenge is certainly communication: we have a technical background that other construction stakeholders might not have. It is our responsibility to show them, through simplicity, the advantages of the solutions we propose. The biggest opportunity is the possibility of working with projects of high artistic and social value, where, if we are able to fruitfully communicate our ideas, we can make a difference.
What are you passionate about?
Often, energy efficiency and comfort of the occupants are contrasting aspects when designing a building. I am passionate about all the successful projects that manage to bring these two aspects together, thus creating efficient buildings in which the highest standards of comfort and wellbeing are assured to the occupants.
