Glazed facade for a new Paris Apple store, located within a historic public market. The design accommodates existing timber beams, which pierce through the glass.

Apple Marché Saint-Germain is Apple’s first store on the Left Bank and third in Paris. It is situated in the historic public market, a site which dates back to the 1400s. Eckersley O’Callaghan has engineered the glazed main entrance facade and smaller skylights and supporting structures in the existing traditional Parisien building.

We were presented with the challenge of incorporating the existing timber trusses, which pierce through the 10 metre-tall facade at peak level. Our design of notches in the glass accommodated movement and tolerance with the provision of an appropriate sealant.

The facade was designed for high intruder resistance requirements, using a double thickness interlayer between the facade panels to withstand forceful impact.

We designed the main skylight to meet Bureau de Controle waterproofing requirements with minimal visual impact.
