Glazed roof with carbon fibre structure inserted into the historic courtyard of a Grade II-listed building.

Constructed between Floral Street and Long Acre in London’s Covent Garden district, the Carriage Hall project has rejuvenated a historic timber and cast-iron structure with the insertion of a new glazed roof within an open courtyard. Eckersley O’Callaghan provided full design engineering to the skylight and facade engineering for two glazed facades inserted into the existing building.

To minimise its weight and the consequent impact on the existing structure, we developed a carbon fibre structure with slim framing profiles supporting glazing units 3.5 metres wide. The environmental performance of the roof has been verified to out-perform alternative metal-framed skylight systems.
