Keble College is one of the largest of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford. Eckersley O’Callaghan was appointed as glass consultant for the structural glass elements of Keble College’s new mixed-use building, which includes residential, theatre and café spaces.
The main glass element was the entrance canopy. Glass beams cantilever to support a 4 x 4 metre laminated glass roof. In order to support the loads generated, highly engineered bearings in the beams are integrated within the concealed gutter. These contain counter-rotating flat-sided cams in order to deal with the tolerances of bolting through holes in laminated glass beams.
Other areas of structural glass included the large glazed corner to the garden which wraps over the building as a faceted-curve rooflight and down the street elevation as a glass slot.
