Refurbishment of an educational complex in Marseille, transforming the main building, administration block, and library to improve thermal performance and meet fire safety standards.

Eckersley O’Callaghan is supporting the refurbishment of the Faculty of Pharmacy in Marseille. The project involves upgrading the 37m tall main building (classified IGH), the administration building, and the library to improve thermal performance and meet fire safety regulations.

The facades feature a stick curtain wall system with mullions and transoms, pre-assembled in factory modules. These are installed between existing concrete spines and include windows, a shadow box at the apron wall, and an aluminium rainscreen louvred system. The glazing is fritted with horizontal orange lines for visual effect.

The core, where stairs are located, incorporates rainscreen cladding over masonry walls with fixed glazing and openable windows for comfort and smoke extraction. The main entrance and administrative block use an isolated curtain wall system with glazing or aluminium cladding, including doors and openable windows.

The library facades include windows for smoke extraction, a steel stick curtain wall system, and fixed external sunshades at the top.

We designed the new facades around existing asbestos-contaminated elements, improving thermal performance and meeting French fire regulations, including C&D (reaction to fire — C, and smoke production — D), and MCM (mobilisable combustible mass) restrictions. We also detailed smoke extraction calculations in the library, integrating the horizontal sunshades installed in front of the window smoke vent.
