Great Ormond Street Hospital is an acclaimed institution, and their new Zayed Centre for Research is being developed in a partnership between University College London and the Hospital. The building will contain an outpatients’ clinic, laboratories, specialist equipment rooms and workplaces for researchers.

Eckersley O’Callaghan acted as the client’s facade engineer for this new building located within the Bloomsbury Conservation Area, where the materiality of the facade has been carefully selected to be sensitive to the building’s surroundings. The facade is constructed of a mix of systems, including glazed curtain walling, brickwork, precast concrete and terracotta.

A reflective glazed box at the upper floors extends up to become a translucent plant screen with a layered mesh backing. The terracotta fins on the front elevation are fixed back through the curtain walling, just one of a number of interfaces that required careful detailing in the design stage to ensure its success.

The building will achieve BREEAM Excellent, helped by a facade design that uses passive measures including considered massing and orientation of windows to maximise daylight penetration and provide a high quality internal work environment.
