190m cycleway bridge connecting Sydney Harbour route with Bradfield Park North.
The proposed new Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway is the most heavily used in the city, with approximately 2,000 bike trips taken each weekday. It will connect the northern end of the main bridge cycle path to Bradfield Park North, a connection currently requiring cyclists to go up or down 50 steps. Along with Aspect Studios urban design, Collins and Turner Architects, Yerrabingin and Design 5 consultants, Eckersley O’Callaghan won the open design competition held in 2021.
The 190m long structure follows a carefully chosen path considering cyclist safety and comfort, heritage, architectural context and the impact on the park.
The design of the bridge features a central beam that sweeps from side to side enabling the freedom to locate the piers off centre from the bridge deck and tailor their location in the park. The steel bridge structure maintains a slender elevation and Eckersley O’Callaghan has been central to the geometry definition as well as structural engineering.
The slender bridge deck sits on tapered and profiled elliptical precast piers which have been optimised to minimise elevational profile and concrete volume. In addition to the design of the bridge structure, Eckersley O’Callaghan is leading the industrial design of the balustrade components developed as a series of castings and which form a key aesthetic identity for
the project.
